New Milton is a market town in the New Forest district of Hampshire, six miles from both Lymington and Christchurch. The “Milton” in its name goes back to the manor of “Mildeltune” — “middle farm” — listed in the Domesday Book of 1086. At the 2021 census the parish had 25,546 residents, 11,870 of them in the town itself.

New Milton grew up around its railway station, opened in March 1888, and took its name from the post office opposite — in 1895 it put up a “New Milton Sub Post Office” sign to tell itself apart from the post office in Old Milton.
