Barton on Sea is a cliff-top village just south of New Milton town centre, inside New Milton parish and the Barton & Becton ward, BH25 7. A 34-metre cliff separates the houses from the beach, with paths down to the shore and a cliff-top path east to Milford on Sea. Barton has long been a popular place to retire, and there are guest houses and B&Bs on the seafront road and in the village streets behind it, so this page covers the home wash and the guest-house wash together.

Barton is known for its fossils: the Barton Beds in the cliff are full of them and may give their name to the Bartonian stage of the Eocene. It was also the first place in England to try rock groynes against coastal erosion. On the cliff top by Marine Drive stands an obelisk put up in 1917 for the First World War convalescent home for Indian servicemen, and the Coast Guard cottages on Barton Lane were built at the end of the nineteenth century to stop smuggling. At the east end, the golf club has three loops of nine holes, and Stroller, the only pony ever to show-jump at the Olympics (individual silver, 1968), lies under the course.
