Springbourne sits in the north-east of central Bournemouth, north of Boscombe, bounded by Northcote Road, the Wessex Way, Ashley Road and the railway line. It began as a village for the craftsmen and artisans who built the growing town — their mid- to late-Victorian cottages still stand around Northcote Road and Lytton Road — and later gained avenues of Edwardian houses named after American presidents and statesmen, such as Garfield Avenue and Washington Avenue. Holdenhurst Road, once the A338 into town, is still one of Bournemouth’s main shopping streets and bus routes. With a pickup from the door, your laundry never has to travel along it in a bag.

The name comes from an old spring near the Windham Road end of Spring Road, whose stream ran underground to Boscombe Chine and the sea.
